hey Strat. I was going to start a thread saying that Playin is THE greatest jam vehicle the band ever had. The fact that they became bored with with Dark Star and put it down prroves it to me. No other tune they played provided as intersting and varied jams for that long of a duration.

Johnny, I agree about PITB being a better jam vehicle than Dark Star and maybe a more versatile jam vehicle as well which is what i think Strat was suggesting. Maybe I am looking at things with 30 years of perspective and no interesting chemicals on board but I think most Dark Stars in 73 and 74 simply got too spacey, almost to the point of it being noise. This never happened with PITB and because the jams were a bit more thematic it was amenable to making sandwiches with like when they would slap a UJB in the middle. I know there a are a few split DS but I personally don't think they worked as well. However I do feel that PITB was basically a jam vehicle (except in 71) where Bird Song could be many different things.

from most accounts, Donna was doing what she was asked to do by Jerry during PITB so I don't think she was trying to ruin it. Actually I never found Donna's screaming during PITB to be so difficult to swallow and besides they only lasted a few seconds. Scarlet Begonias is another story. That wailing lasts longer and is kind of annoying.
